Realty TV Group 2 and 3

John Winkler
10/12/11

Group 2 and Group 3 did a presentation on chapter 2. Both groups talked mainly about what defined Reality TV and Documentaries, providing key points that differentiated the two. The most important concern raised was that some people don’t know how to differentiate between the two. Future research on this topic can be done by holding a public survey to see how many people can differentiate between the two. The Topic name is “Performing the Real, Documentary Diversions.” In Group 2 the presenters were Mariam, Jude, and Jose. In Group 3 the presenter was Lena.

Group 4 did a presentation on chapter 3. The group talked mainly about the difference between Reality TV and Documentaries, and how society looks at it. The main point that was used was that the “social weight” is the biggest difference. Reality t.v. doesn’t focus on educational exploration and documentaries do, in fact that’s the whole point of them. The most important concern raised was that people would rather watch the senseless entertainment of reality t.v. instead of the educational documentary. Future research on this topic can be done by holding a public survey to understand why people would rather watch reality t.v. instead of documentaries. The Topic name is “I think we need a new name for it, the meeting of documentary and reality tv.” In Group 4 the presenters were Dana and Briana.

Reality TV H8R Case Study Group Work
After viewing H8R episode, answer the following questions. You may go to the CW site and watch full episodes.

1.What is the format of the show? How is the program developed to make the viewer watch for an hour each week?
Celebrites go head to head with real people that don’t like them, and try to win them over. The program brings in viewers because it’s a new unique concept of taking a celebrity and an average person and putting them in face to face situations where there is huge conflict between the two.

2.Why was each person selected for the show? What characteristics do they have that would be appealing to the producers of the show? Analyze each person.
Each celebrity is picked for the show because they have a fan base of people who hate them. And the normal person picked is someone who hates them. Producers look for celebrites who maybe disliked because of a false image that the media has given them. The normal people they look for are people who hate these celebrities for what is most likely uneducated reasons. In the episode I watched Joe Francis and Kim Kardashian were the celebrities who were confronted by “haters.” Joe Francis has a fan base of haters because of his company girls gone wild which has a reputation for exploiting women. Kim Kardashian has a fan base of haters because they think she’s too fake.

3.List 5 more possible combinations of future cast pairs.
              1) Eminem and people who hate him and/or rappers.
              2) Johnny Knoxville and people who hate his company “Jackass,” and think that he is a bad influence.
              3) George Bush and people that hate his life in politics.
              4) Paris Hilton and people who hate her lifestyle.
              5) Mike “The Situation” and people that hate him for how he’s portrayed on Jersey Shore.

4.What are some potential hooks, contests, votes, or features that you could add to the show?
People could possibly vote at end of the show on who is the bigger hater of the two normal people on the show.

5.Are there prizes, or other elements that you could add to promote week-to-week viewing and an interactive model for viewers?
People could at the end of the episode vote for people that they want to see hated on and the next episode can feature them.

Group 5 did a presentation on chapter 5. The group talked mainly about the role of families represented in both Reality TV and Documentaries. The main question raised was, are these families we see on t.v. ordinary? The reality is that these families we see on t.v. are generally not what you would call a typical “American modern family.” In fact, the last instance where a ordinary American family was represented was about 30yrs ago. These families that we are shown on t.v. are made-up to look ordinary, but in truth they are “extraordinary.” A good example of this is the show “The Osbournes,” a show based off the life of rock star Ozzy Osbourne and his family. They were made to look like they are a normal American family but in truth they are far from it. Future research on this topic can be done by holding a public survey that asks people which television family they would most likely compare their families too. The Topic name is “Extraordinary and Ordinary, Osbournes as an American Family.” In Group 5 the presenters were Jason, Marcus and Tisha.
